- The recurring costs (cloud hosting, software support, credential licences and maintenance visits) can outweigh the installation price over a five-year life, so compare five-year totals rather than installation quotes.

How much does an access control system cost?
There is no honest single figure. Access control is priced per door against a specification, and the drivers are the number of doors, the lock and reader chosen for each, whether the system is standalone, networked or cloud hosted, the cabling route, the condition of the existing doors, and any fire or intruder alarm integration. Get a per-door breakdown from two or three installers and compare the five-year cost, not the installation price.
What is the cheapest way to control one door?
A standalone keypad or fob reader programmed at the door. It has no ongoing fees and no software, and it gives you no audit trail and no easy way to revoke a lost credential. For one low-risk door that is often the right answer; for anything that needs to know who went where, it is not.
Are there ongoing costs with access control?
Usually. Cloud systems charge a subscription per door or per user, on-premises systems carry software support and eventually a server refresh, mobile credentials carry per-user licences, and most sites take a planned maintenance visit. Ask for the annual figure in writing before you sign.
Do I need permission to install access control?
For most commercial buildings, no separate permission is needed, but you do need your landlord's consent if you are a tenant, listed building consent for protected fabric, and agreement from your fire risk assessor for anything that affects escape routes. Access control that logs entries also processes personal data, so it belongs in your records of processing.
